Brilliant Poetry champions the power of poetry to make the complex and often abstract world of scientific inquiry accessible and captivating to all. The competition seeks to reinforce the value of artistic expression in expanding our perception of what it means to know and to discover.

Brilliant Poetry is an initiative of Dr Sam Illingworth, Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University and Kylie Ahern, publisher of science communication publication, The Brilliant, and CEO of strategy consultancy, STEM Matters.

DR SAM ILLINGWORTH
Associate professor at Edinburgh Napier University

Dr Sam Illingworth is an internationally renowned expert in the use of poetry to establish dialogue between different audiences. He has delivered poetry-writing workshops to 1,000+ researchers and is the editor of Consilience, the world’s first peer-reviewed science & poetry journal.

KYLIE AHERN
Founder, The Brilliant & STEM Matters

Serial entrepreneur, CEO and media trailblazer, Kylie Ahern, has transformed how Australians understand and interact with STEM. From creating award-winning science and environmental magazines including COSMOS and G: The Green Lifestyle Publication to helping launch Nature Publishing Group in Australia and New Zealand, Kylie has forged a new path at the intersection of science, industry and media. Kylie is the founder of international consultancy firm STEM Matters and science communication publication, The Brilliant.

BRIAN BROPHY
Director of Caltech Theater

Brian Brophy is Director of Caltech Theater, Story Coach at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) co-creator of Credible Messenger Training, Fulbright Scholar to India and Artist/Scholar in Residence at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITGN). He facilitates scientific storytelling workshops/community-capacity building, global/local collaborations and is a twenty-five-year veteran actor in the film/TV/theater industry.


Our judge, Dava Soblel

Celebrated writer, Dava Sobel, is best known for exploring scientific topics for a wide audience. An astronomy lover and self-proclaimed eclipse chase, she has authored bestsellers including Longitude and Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love.
